Engibase was started in 2004 in the city of Barreiro, Portugal, by the brothers Miguel and Pedro Santos, as of date its CEO and CFO, respectively. As of their academic background, Miguel is an electrical engineer and a member of the Portuguese Board of Engineers, and Pedro is an economist and a member of the Portuguese Board of Economists.
Our company carries out its operation in the civil construction and public works markets, with activities across six business areas: Civil Construction / Public Works, Study and Design, Project Managing, Real Estate Developing, Research & Development in Renewable Energy, Interior Floor Coverings. Currently, it derives the majority of its revenue from the Civil Construction / Public Works business area as a General Contractor (building permit IMPIC class 5).
We at Engibase believe that a company should have its own identity and that that reveals itself through the continuous practice of a set of principles – values, norms of conduct, standards – which the company chooses to adopt. Here are the principles we chose to guide everyone in our organization in their daily activities as well as in their strategic decisions:
Responsibility – we take everything we do and the people we deal with very seriously.
Trust – our clients trust us, know they can count on us, whether during the commercial phase of a project, its execution phase, or after delivery of service. It’s the same kind of trust that unites our whole team. We’re a very united team and it shows, some of our colleagues are with us pretty much since the start of this adventure.
Quality – because we like it. And because we have found that in many cases it is not a question of additional financial cost, but of attitude.
Added value – we aim at distancing ourselves from the typical idea of construction services as a commodity.
Continuous improvement – we believe there’s always a better way to do it; we’re somewhat obsessed by details and planning.
Systematizing processes and operations – we believe productivity can be significantly improved via systematizing procedures.
Safety at work – we insist on our teams working under strict safety standards.
Environment – we love the environment and want to preserve it. After all, it’s for our children.
Financial strictness – as a company, none of the things we described above make sense or are viable in the absence of strict financial management.
These values, norms of conduct and standards are passed on from the top down to the field workers and through all stages of management and this continuous daily process provides the company with its own identity which clients recognize since the beginning. We’re restless in its implementation and it has worked so far: new clients come to us almost exclusively by word-of-mouth and we have quite interesting levels of private client retention. At the same time, we’re financially profitable.
We want to tell you a little more about our financial management because we believe it’s had a crucial role in our history. On this discipline of management we chose to adopt the following guidelines:
We chose these guidelines in the face of the economic sector specificities we operate in, and the peculiar context of Portuguese economy. We recognize that under different circumstances some of our guidelines might have been distinct than those. We also conceive building our growth in the foreseeable future under a more aggressive financing model, however, always keeping in mind how important it is to maintain a financially healthy balance sheet. Being as it may, based on its model Engibase has always been profitable since its inception and in all of the subsequent fiscal years. It’s a financially stable and solid company, with great independence against third parties and with an unusual balance sheet amongst companies in this sector and of this size. As an example, here are some ratios at the end of the first quarter of fiscal 2020:
Financial autonomy
(equity / assets)
General solvability
(equity / liabilities)
General liquidity
(current assets / current liabilities)
Our goal is to assert ourselves as a recognized company in everything we do, certain that, provided we remain faithful to the general principles that are the core of our professional ethics, it will result in continuous growth and a profitable operation in the medium and long term.
In the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the year 2020 motivated reflection and we made some strategic decisions in order to better prepare the company for the future. Among them, we decided to recreate our corporate image. One example was a drastic change to the logo we had since our foundation. Here’s the result:
